FILM PRODUCTION IN CALIFORNIA GETS A BOOST

The Chamber applauds the state Assembly for voting to approve an estimated $500 million in tax credits for five more years to help keep movie-making jobs in our State. "California has dozens of foreign rivals and more than 40 other U.S. states that are competing for this business with tax credits and rebates. That’s why it is so important that we renew this incentive package for five more years," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. This bill will help us retain and create jobs by leveling the playing field and making California competitive. The Senate will vote on the issue later this summer. Voice support for Chamber-sponsored education bills
Four Chamber co-sponsored education bills — AB1304 (Block), AB 790 (Furutani), AB 250 and AB 18 (Brownley) — passed the Assembly Floor this week and are now headed to the Senate. AB 1304 will improve the preparation and professional development of teachers that provide instruction in applied learning programs, and improve existing teacher training programs. AB 790 establishes a Linked Learning high school pilot program that would allow participating districts to implement a district wide approach that supports strong academics, technical education and real world experiences in the classroom. AB 250 will establish clear goals for learning in order to prepare students for success in college and careers. AB 18 will be a vehicle for comprehensively reforming the State's public school finance system. Voice your support for these bills by taking action today. Contact Sonia Campos-Rivera, 213.580.7538.

Focusing on the economy with Leadership Southern California 2011
The trade infrastructure in Los Angeles is key to overall logistics efficiency in the United States, said John Holmes, Port of Los Angeles deputy director of operations at the Leadership Southern California 2011 seminar on economic and workforce development on Friday. Leadership Southern California 2011 Fellows focused on broad themes of international trade, tourism and energy with visits to the APM Terminals at the Port of Los Angeles and Chevron Products Company, where they met with top leaders in these fields and gained a better understanding of economic development in Southern California. Economist John Husing provided a macro regional economic and workforce development forecast, saying that health and social justice are part of the jobs creation conversation. He stressed that leaders need to address linkages and collaborate for job growth. Contact April Tam, 213.580.7524.

Free Trade Agreement
In addition to the federal discussion of a U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA), a California state resolution asking Congress to pass the FTA will be heard in the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee on Monday, June 13. The trade agreement with Korea is a big win for California and U.S. economies. The agreement with Korea will enhance the ability of U.S. companies to compete in the dynamic Asian economy. The U.S.-Korea FTA will bring real benefits for U.S. and California workers and businesses and help maintain America's leadership position in an increasingly competitive global environment. Business Case for Breastfeeding
Monday, June 13
California Endowment

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's RENEW LA County initiative will be hosting this special training in partnership with the Breastfeeding Task Force of Greater Los Angeles. Providing lactation accommodations has been law in California since 2001, but fewer than 25 percent of private employers and only 11 percent of government employers have worksite lactation policies or programs. HR managers and other business leaders will learn about implementing a worksite lactation accommodation policy, and how to comply with the new federal law and maximize risk management. Two sessions are available: 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. Register now or contact Genevieve Thomas Colvin or 818.824.4938.
