The Chamber's Education & Workforce Development Council convened Thursday to address Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and the urgent need to pass DREAM Act legislation at the federal level. Guest speakers Antonia Hernandez of California Community Foundation and Patty First of the Raben Group spoke on the pressing need for comprehensive immigration reform and stressed how immigration strengthens our economy. They cautioned that some legislators do not sense the urgency of DACA legislation because of President Trump's March 5 deadline to make a decision. Since the President terminated DACA on Sept. 5, approximately 122 DACA recipients lose protection every day. Every day that passes is detrimental for DACA recipients, their families, employers and our economy.
Chamber advocates for middle-income Linkage Fee exemption
Wednesday, L.A. City Council approved the Affordable Housing Linkage Fee (AHLF). At the meeting, the Chamber spoke in support of Councilman Gil Cedillo's motion requesting a study to exempt middle-income housing (for households making 120-150 percent of AMI). The Council approved the motion and the Chamber will push for a middle-income housing exemption in the final ordinance. READ MORE and VIEW THE MOTION.
Chamber shows support for permanent supportive housing
The Chamber testified Thursday in favor of the Permanent Supportive Housing Ordinance at the L.A. City Planning Commission. This ordinance will create a streamlined process that removes unnecessary barriers and red tape to create homes for our homeless community. The Chamber also testified in support of the Interim Motel Conversion Ordinance, which will allow the use of existing resources to house our homeless community while permanent housing is being built.
Chamber weighs in with conference committee on tax reform
The Chamber sent letters to House and Senate conference committee members this week with additional input on the tax reform bills Congress is working to reconcile. We urged the committee to take the Senate approach to continuing the exemption for private activity bonds and graduate tuition, and again shared our opposition to the elimination of the state and local tax deduction, which is a component of both bills.
