City Council opted not to introduce a motion for the appeal of building permits for a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Chinatown. Construction of the market will continue, with plans to open in the next several months. The Chamber has been a proponent for the construction of this market, which will add 65 new jobs. Contact Jessica Duboff, 213.580.7558. • Speak up on digital billboards As a proponent for smart policies that encourage business growth through advertisement opportunities, the Chamber recently participated in the City’s Billboard and Visual Landscape Visioning Group to call for the establishment of a clear and consistent city policy on digital billboard: – The Chamber will voice its support at a meeting of the City Planning and Land Use Management Committee on Tuesday, March 26, 2:30 p.m. at City Hall. – Members are encouraged to become a part of Sign Up LA, a coalition of business groups, nonprofit organizations, community groups and sign companies that support the reasonable use and location of digital signs in Los Angeles. City Controller Wendy Greuel spoke to the Chamber's Executive Board to share her vision for pension reform and the City's fiscal sustainability. Greuel made clear that she does not support a rollback of recent City of Los Angeles pension reforms, and believes that more action needs to be taken with all stakeholders to fix the pension system. Jobs Political Action Committee (PAC), sponsored by the Chamber, announced its endorsement of Curren Price for L.A. City Council District 9. "Curren has an extensive record of public service as an advocate for small business, both locally and in the State Legislature in Sacramento," said L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. Chamber recognizes member volunteers for their work in 2012 Today, the Chamber Board recognized three members who volunteered their time during 2012. Chamber members help eligible employees through citizenship process Three quarters of a million Green Card holders in L.A. County are eligible to become citizens. The Chamber is working with businesses to facilitate the citizenship process for their employees. On Wednesday, the Chamber, in partnership with five local and national community partners, hosted a citizenship information session for more than 250 workers at American Apparel, Inc., LLC. "Our employees, left well informed and energized to take the step towards a better life for them and their families," said Martin Bailey, vice president of operations for American Apparel. Clean Tech Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator unite Two of the region's leading cleantech initiatives are joining forces to futher their mission of championing and continuing L.A.'s standing as a green economic powerhouse and world-class innovation hub.
