Chamber's Bixel Exchange kicks off the L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline initiative with Mayor Garcetti

This week, the Chamber's Bixel Exchange celebrated the official launch of L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti's L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline initiative at an event hosted at General Assembly DTLA. The L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline - a partnership between the Mayor and Bixel Exchange - is a component of the HIRE LA's Youth program, and brings together public and private sector partners to expand training and job opportunities for the next generation of talent. Beginning this summer, the pipeline will place at least 100 young Angelenos in tech jobs. With nearly 150 attendees, the event featured a roundtable discussion on the current state of tech career pathways for students in L.A. with educators and business leaders, and data from LinkedIn. The event also included two career development workshops for students and a panel featuring representatives from LinkedIn, Data 360, Boingo Wireless and mitú. READ THE RELEASE and SEE THE PHOTOS.

Chamber helps bring $32 million to L.A. region in Prop 47 savings

Last week, the California Board of State and Community Corrections announced the disbursement of $103 million in Proposition 47 savings to 23 cities and counties in California. The L.A. region received the largest portion with $32 million. The County, the City and the City Attorney's Office all received funding to support community-based organizations focused on mental health and drug treatment, K-12 school programs, and victim services. The Chamber advocated heavily for the proposition during last year's budget conversation, which reduces several, non-violent, non-serious crimes from felonies to misdemeanors and invests the savings into programs aimed at reducing crime. LEARN MORE.

Chamber addresses statewide K-12 teacher shortage

Assemblymember Tony Thurmond joined the Chamber's Education & Workforce Development Council last Friday, discussing what the legislature is currently doing to address the statewide K-12 teacher shortage. The Council meeting also included remarks from Tara Kini of the Learning Policy Institute and from Dr. Michael Spagna, Dean of the Michael D. Eisner College of Education at California State University, Northridge, who offered ideas on how higher education can work proactively to produce more quality K-12 teachers. 75 percent of California districts reported teacher shortages in the 2016-17 school year. Chamber urges caution on motion to restrict oil and gas operations

On Wednesday, the Chamber testified at the L.A. City Council's Health, Mental Health and Education Committee regarding a motion that would authorize a report analyzing changes to the City's land use code relative to oil and gas development. The Chamber expressed concern about unintended impacts this could have on energy supply and reliability, as well as possible increases in energy prices and job losses.

At two committee meetings this week, Metro Board members received a report on the work the Measure M PAC has engaged on the last few months to provide a set of implementing guidelines for the tax dollars. For Kaiser Permanente, the community is at the center of all they do

It all began with the simple idea that everyone deserves the chance to live a healthy life, and now Chamber member Kaiser Permanente serves more than 11 million health plan members. But the largest managed care organization in the U.S. also plays a big role in the lives of youth. On Monday, June 19, Kaiser Permanente will again kick off their summer internship program, giving students the opportunity for a first-hand experience in the health care field. Many students need your help with real work experience. You can do so through the L.A. Talent Challenge. LEARN MORE.
