Chamber urges members to vote "Yes" on Propositions 1A-1F
The May 19 California Special Election Ballot contains critical initiatives that will impact L.A. businesses and the economy for years to come. Props 1A-1F is a package of budget reforms designed to aid short-term economic recovery and enact long-term solutions to the budget crisis. They address many of the guiding principles for reform that the L.A. Area Chamber developed in June 2008. The Chamber encourages members to vote "Yes" on Tuesday. New board members join Chamber Board of Directors
The Chamber announced five new appointments Thursday to its Board of Directors including: Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Chief Executive Officer, Art Leahy; Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP Partner, George Kieffer; Nestlé USA, Inc. Vice President, Kenneth W. Bentley; University of Southern California (USC) Vice President for Government and Community Relations, Thomas Sayles; and Para Los Niños President and CEO, Gisselle Acevedo. "These renowned leaders from our community will bring important business, political and civic experience and perspective to our Board as we work to grow business, create jobs and accelerate economic recovery in the L.A. region," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. Chamber small business owners get innovative

At the Chamber’s Small Business Owners Roundtable Wednesday, small business owners discussed innovative marketing strategies that can be used to accelerate recovery for small businesses including Twitter and LinkedIn. Edward Headington, Headington Media Group, said the challenge of moving forward in the mobile world is maintaining professionalism. "You must maintain your digital identity – it’s all out there, good or bad," Headington said. Leadership L.A. looks at different aspects of health care in L.A. County
The 2009 Fellows met at the newly-acquired USC University Hospital Friday to discuss health care access, delivery and reform, and the importance of building healthy communities. "There is a severe service capacity problem in Los Angeles," said Jim Lott, executive vice president, Hospital Association of Southern California. Lott stressed that innovative models are key to maintaining wellness in our communities. Fellows also spoke with Mitch Creem, CEO, USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer Hospital, about the university's acquisition of two private hospitals, which will attract new medical talent to Southern California. WesPac Energy Group receives environmental compliance approval for project
The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to certify the Environmental Impact Review for WesPac Energy Group's Smart Energy’s Transport System (SETS). The Chamber supports SETS, which is a privately funded infrastructure project that will deliver jet fuel to LAX customers, providing hundreds of jobs. Read More.

Goodwill Southern California expands services
A new Goodwill store on Beverly Boulevard opened May 8. Store revenue goes to support Goodwill programs benefiting people with vocational disadvantages and disabilities. Chamber supports Middle Harbor project
The Long Beach City Council recently voted to support the $750 million Middle Harbor Redevelopment Project. The Chamber supports the 10-year project, which will upgrade terminal efficiency, more than double cargo capacity, add 14,000 new jobs — including nearly 1,000 construction jobs annually and slash air pollution by 50 percent from current levels. Chamber speaks out on signage
The City of L.A.'s Planning and Land Use Management committee recently voted to approve the Planning Department’s proposed sign code revisions. The Chamber testified in support of separating onsite and offsite signage to ensure business’s signs are protected. The L.A. City Council is set to vote on the ordinance Wednesday, May 20, 10 a.m. Take action today.
