 FIRST LADY OF THE U.S. APPLAUDS L.A.'S HOMELESS VETERANS INITIATIVE On Wednesday, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the Unite for Veterans Summit in Century City and emphasized the work that Los Angeles is doing to transition veterans through employment and support resources. "And here in L.A., the United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce have brought public and private partners together for an incredible program called Home For Good — and together, you have housed more than 9,000 veterans since 2011," said Obama. L.A. County has the largest homeless veterans population in the country. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti pledged to house 2,600 homeless veterans in L.A. in the next year and a half. Chamber discusses exclusive franchise waste haul system The City of L.A. recently began accepting Request for Proposals from businesses interested in participating in the new city-wide waste management system. On Tuesday, Kevin James, president of the City's Board of Public Works met with the Chamber's Energy, Water and Environmental Sustainability Council to answer questions about the new system and the implementation process. “Our goal is to make it the best and most efficient system with a smooth transition," James said. The Council also heard from Patty Senecal, Western States Petroleum Association, who gave a presentation on the potential impacts of California’s Cap and Trade law on transportation fuels. Leadership L.A. 2014 classes focus on social infrastructure of city On Friday, the two Leadership L.A. 2014 cohorts met at the Wilshire Boulevard Temple to focus on the internal dynamics of leadership and the social infrastructure of the City. The day included a panel discussion on the social good in Los Angeles' social fabric. "We get people to believe they have a future and that we can help them get there," said Alan Acosta, L.A.
