From educate to innovate: Building tomorrow's diverse, tech leaders
As Bixel Exchange celebrates its third anniversary as the technology center of the Chamber, we are reminded of the powerhouse that is L.A.'s emerging tech ecosystem. Today, it was reinforced as our Information & Technology Policy Council heard from Sacramento Mayor-Elect Darrell Steinberg. Steinberg talked about California's Career Technical Education Pathways Program (CCPT) that encourages students from middle school through community college to pursue careers in technology. The former Senate President Pro Tem, Steinberg was instrumental in introducing legislation supporting career pathways to help create a workforce that represents California's diversity. OVERVIEW OF CCPT.

Wins for Chamber-supported items addressing homelessness

The L.A. City Council voted Wednesday to put a $1.2 billion bond measure on the November ballot that will be used to build permanent, supportive housing for the homeless and affordable housing for low income families. It needs to pass by a 2/3 threshold in November. The Chamber, along with our Home for Good partner, United Way Greater Los Angeles, has supported this measure during the City Council process.

At the State level, the No Place Like Home initiative made it through budget negotiations. The Chamber's ACCESS Sacramento trip advocated for this bill that provides $2 billion in revenue bonds toward homelessness support programs in California. It was authored by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and endorsed by Governor Brown.

BOTTOM LINE: The Chamber remains committed to ending homelessness, and supports efforts to move toward this goal.
Minimum wage and paid sick leave mandates to begin July 1

The Chamber reminds you of the increases in the minimum wage and paid sick leave that will take effect on July 1 for employers in the City of L.A. and in the unincorporated portions of L.A. County. The Chamber lobbied extensively against the minimum wage increase that will reach $15.00 per hour in 2020. The original proposal for paid sick leave was 12 days per year and we were successful in reducing that number to six.  CLICK HERE FOR THE MANDATORY POSTER.

BOTTOM LINE: The Chamber reminds members about upcoming minimum wage and sick time changes.
