Chamber Celebrates 136th Year of Leadership in the Region

The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated 136 years of business leadership in the region during the annual Inaugural. The signature event, themed, “Bringing the World Within Reach,” included nearly 800 guests, business and civic leaders from throughout the region. The event highlighted the innovative global economy of the region and its attraction to businesses across the globe. Guest enjoyed an evening on the beautiful grounds of the Skirball Cultural Center.

 

2024 Inaugural Recognizes Business Leadership

The L.A. Area Chamber celebrated its annual Inaugural event, and presented the Distinguished Business Leader award to Angel City Football Club co-founders, Julie Uhrman, Kara Nortman, and Natalie Portman. This honor is given to individuals who demonstrate extraordinary success in business and a commitment to the greater community. The Corporate Leadership Award, given to an organization which demonstrates exceptional leadership and dedication to the growth of the region, was presented to JPMorgan ChaseKelly Shupe, Business Banking Division Director, accepted the honor on behalf of the company.

 

Meet Janet Lamkin, L.A. Area Chamber's 2024 Board Chair

The Chamber's Inaugural welcomed the organization’s incoming Board chair, Janet Lamkin, Senior Vice President of global market and community innovation with United Airlines. The Chamber is excited to welcome Janet as our new Board chair, "as a forward-thinking leader who champions global opportunities for dynamic regions like Los Angeles, she understands the impact, thinking globally can have in creating jobs, opportunity and an economy which works for all,” stated Maria S. Salinas, L.A. Area Chamber President and CEO.

 

Celebrating Community Impact Award Partners GLAAACC

This year the Community Impact Award, which recognizes partners who help to amplify the Chamber’s work in supporting small businesses and growing the economy, was presented to the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC). Gene Hale, GLAAACC Chairman and Founder, along with Angela Gibson-Shaw, President and CEO, accepted the award. Congratulations to the entire GLAAACC team!

California State Legislature Deadline

Today is the last day for new bills to be introduced to the California State Legislature. The Chamber has been closely following and monitoring bills that have been introduced.

New Bill Providing Unemployment Insurance Introduced

A new bill that would provide unemployment insurance (UI) benefits for striking workers was introduced in the California Legislature this week by Senator Anthony Portantino. This new bill, SB 1116, is a reintroduction of last year’s SB 799, which was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom. The Chamber will strongly advocate in opposition to this bill.

GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT

JBA Holds Meeting on Hydrogen Technology

The Japan Business Association (JBA) of Southern California held a meeting on a Sustainable Future with Hydrogen Technology. The event was hosted at the residence of the Consulate General of Japan in Los Angeles. Kenko Sone and his wife Mami opened the official residence of the Consul General of Japan to guests to learn about Hydrogen innovations in Japan. Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas joined the meeting with other business and civic leaders from the southland.

L.A. County Sidewalk Vending Ordinance Passed

Led by the Department of Economic Opportunity, L.A. County's new Sidewalk Vending Ordinance is set to revolutionize street vending in the unincorporated areas. It aligns with state laws for decriminalizing sidewalk vending and focuses on public health, safety, and community welfare. With clear definitions, registration requirements, and operational guidelines, it offers a path for vendors to legally and safely conduct their businesses. Stay informed and learn how this ordinance supports vendors as entrepreneurs, ensuring compliance and offering resources for success.

Chamber Joins Mobility 21 in Sacramento

The Chamber joined Mobility 21, the Southern California regional transportation coalition, in Sacramento this week. California Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin met with the coalition and shared the agency’s goals for 2024, based on the “Core Four” principles: Safety, Equity, Climate Action, and Economic Prosperity. California is set to receive $33 billion from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the largest funding to any one state. CalTrans Director Tony Taveras joined the meeting and shared some of the investment in infrastructure, projects and goals to expand small business spend. The visit to Sacramento included meetings with legislators, High Speed Rail Authority, and the Governor’s office.
