Education Summit Explores Deeper Partnership Between Business & Education
This week the Chamber hosted our Education Summit at Loyola Marymount University, where we convened education and business leaders to reimagine how the sectors can collaborate to prepare the workforce for future opportunities. Insightful discussions from university and college presidents, K-12 educators and business leaders explored a new way of thinking about workforce development. It was an honor to welcome Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D., President of Loyola Marymount University, Dr. Francisco Rodriguez, Chancellor of Los Angeles Community College District, Charles Hirschhorn, President of Otis College of Art and Design, Juan Sánchez Muñoz, Chancellor of UC Merced, Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and more to the university campus for this unprecedented event. L.A. Area Chamber Hosts CalChamber
The Chamber was pleased to host Jennifer Barrera, President and CEO of CalChamber, to meet with local Chambers. Maria S. Salinas, Chamber President and CEO, welcomed Jennifer and the CalChamber team to Los Angeles to discuss the needs and impacts of small businesses to our state economy. The convening also served as an opportunity for CalChamber to hear from local Chamber leaders about how to support their growth.

Janet Lamkin Announced as 2024 Board Chair at Annual Retreat
The Chamber hosted its annual Board Retreat, themed "Global Connections, Local Opportunities," and reflected on the organizations' impact from this year. Janet Lamkin, Senior Vice President of Global Market and Community Innovation for United Airlines and incoming Board Chair, took the lead in planning a great agenda which set the foundation for 2024. She also shared the importance of a global view for regional businesses, as we navigate local opportunities. The two-day event also featured engaging presentations from Heather Conley, President of the German Marshall Fund, Jane Duke, Australian Consul-General, and Adam Burke, President & CEO of the Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board, highlighting the region's connection with global commerce.

Chamber Explores AI, Travel and Workforce Development
The Chamber's Board Retreat was highlighted by panel discussions on "The Future and Innovation in Travel," "Building a Future-Ready Workforce," and "Riding the GenAI Wave" with McKinsey and Company. The travel innovation panel included Bryan Bernhard, Head of Infrastructure for Archer Aviation, and Dr. Oliver Fetzer, CEO of Viridos, who shared information about the progresses made in travel sustainability and advanced aerial mobility in the region. The workforce development panel focused on how the business community can work with K-12 schools and higher education to prepare the future workforce and introduce potential career opportunities sooner. Hrishika Vuppala, Sr. Partner for McKinsey and Company, led the discussion on generative AI and why it matters, promising benefits and risks, and how this groundbreaking technology could impact the L.A. region.

Chamber Joins Support Letter for Build More Housing Near Transit Act
The Chamber joined nearly 90 national, state and local organizations in a letter of support for the Build More Housing Near Transit Act. The bipartisan bill, which aims to encourage the construction of low- and middle-income housing in transit-served, walkable locations, was reintroduced in Congress last week by Representatives Scott Peters and Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Senators Brian Schatz and Mike Braun. The bill would direct the Department of Transportation to incentivize local governments to promote housing development and regional growth in and around the transit corridors of future New Starts projects.

Sen. Padilla Establishes Congressional Mental Health Caucus
California Senator Alex Padilla launched the Senate Mental Health Caucus, which is a bipartisan forum to collaborate and advance mental health care. Senator Padilla’s first priority will be to ensure the resources from the bipartisan Safer Communities Act are invested to ensure maximum impact. Other priorities for the caucus include improvements in preventative mental health care, expansions for the mental health professional workforce, and increased accessibility to evidence-based mental health treatment. The Chamber commends the Senator for this new caucus, which will give business leaders a centralized platform to express concerns about the status of mental health treatment in the region and across the country.

Cambodian Delegation Visits Port of Long Beach, Meets Chamber
The Chamber led a special meeting with a Cambodian delegation this week, which included Buon Sarakmony, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Commerce, Neak Oknha Kith Meng, President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, and Kim Chha Hout Hon, Consul-General of Cambodia. The meeting focused on promoting California-Cambodia trade and highlighting the potential economic benefits for Cambodian businesses who work with our region's businesses.

Chamber Presents to Latin American Delegation
The Chamber met with a large Latin American delegation at the Business Alliance for Secure Commerce (BASC) this week. The Chamber advocated for the renewal of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP), which would allow nations to export certain goods and services to the United States without tariffs or reduced rates, which could fuel economic growth. BASC Executive Director Suzanne Lemaitre and BASC President Erik Moncayo also awarded Kenneth L. Wengrod, Vice President of Global Trade and Foreign Investment for the Chamber, with a recognition of appreciation and support.

Chamber President & CEO Featured Keynote at THE Innovation & Impact Summit
Maria S. Salinas, Chamber President & CEO, gave a virtual keynote address for THE Innovation & Impact Summit in Shenzhen, China this week. The conference, themed “Universities and Cities: Advancing Sustainable Innovation,” allowed Salinas to share with a global audience the work of the Chamber and explore the critical role that Los Angeles holds in leading the dynamic shift and partnership between innovation, industry and education.
