Chamber Leads in Advocacy with the City of Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce led nearly 100 delegates to L.A. City Hall this week for its ACCESS L.A. advocacy event to meet with policymakers. The Chamber's delegation attended meetings with Council President Paul Krekorian, as well as Councilmembers Bob Blumenfield, Eunisses Hernandez, John Lee, Tim McOsker, Imelda Padilla, Monica Rodriguez, Nithya Raman, Heather Hutt, and Katy Yaroslavsky or their staff. Delegates highlighted important issues for the business community, especially the challenges that small businesses face when working with the city. With 2024 being an important election year, the business community must engage in local politics to ensure policies support job creation and economic growth. |

Legislature Adjourns 2023 Session
The California Legislature adjourned its 2023 session yesterday after considering more than 2,600 bills, marking the highest number in the past decade. Governor Gavin Newsom now has a 30-day window to either sign or veto bills passed this year. We are deeply concerned and disappointed with the passage of some seriously concerning legislation. The Chamber is strongly advocating that the Governor veto some of these bills. Please look out for some action alerts to engage and join our advocacy efforts. |

Franchise Bill
Over the weekend, labor and business groups reached a compromise to remove a referendum from next year's ballot which aimed to overturn Assembly Bill 257, known as the Fast-Food Accountability and Standards Recovery Act. The deal, detailed in the amended Assembly Bill 1228, includes an increase in the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 per hour in April, along with the establishment of a new council comprised of worker and company representatives to assess potential wage increases in the future. However, the bill no longer includes the provision of joint liability, which is a provision that raised significant concerns for businesses. The Chamber will continue to advocate on the negative impacts this measure will have on businesses. |

UAW Strikes Against Big Three Automakers
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union went on strike today against the Big Three automakers, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler owner Stellantis for the first time in history. The strike will halt the production of several vehicles in Missouri, Michigan and Ohio. Both the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach handle auto parts imports and exports. A long-term UAW strike could disrupt auto parts supply chains by hampering production and increasing costs, affecting the broader economy as well as the San Pedro-based ports. |
