Chamber urges MWD board to take action on California Waterfix
This week, the Chamber sent a letter to the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California strongly urging them to take action on the California WaterFix. Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben will also testify at the MWD Board meeting next Tuesday. READ OUR LETTER
           
 
 
 
AQMD to consider mandates on goods movement industry

Today, the Southern California Air Quality Management District's (SCAQMD) Governing Board will resume their deliberations on developing a facility-based mobile source measure. In March, the Chamber opposed the implementation of these measures at facilities, including ports and airports. The measures would impose limits on the emissions of the mobile-sources, like construction equipment, cargo ships, airplanes, freight trucks and trains, that use these facilities. The Chamber and our industry partners are attending today's Governing Board meeting to continue to express our opposition to the proposed measures.  
 
Gubernatorial Candidates Participate in Forums on Higher Education
 
Earlier this week, UNITE-LA, the Chamber's education and workforce development affiliate, partnered with the Campaign for College Opportunity to host the latest in a series of forums featuring candidates for California Governor. Chamber announces transportation procurement panel for BIZCON Socal
 
This week, the Chamber announced the speakers for its Procurement in Transportation panel at BIZCON Socal, which will be held at the Omni Hotel in Downtown L.A. on June 20. Panelists include Charlene Waters, Business Enterprise Program Administrator at Los Angeles World Airports; Allyson Lavalais, Job Outreach Coordinator at Los Angeles World Airports; Miriam Long, director of Strategic Business & Construction Career at Metro; and Brian Jacob, Contracts & Procurement Department at Metrolink. A full-day business exchange hosted by the Chamber and the U.S. Small Business Administration, BIZCON Socal will bring together entrepreneurs, professionals and thought leaders from companies across the region. Focused on access to capital, procurement, marketing and networking, the day will feature keynote presentations, workshops, panel discussions and direct access to decision makers. RSVP today. 

LARExC leads a California business delegation in Chile
The Los Angeles Regional Export Council (LARExC) organized and participated in the "California Pavilion" at FIDAE 2018 in Santiago, Chile this week. The California delegation of four aerospace parts and components manufacturers attended FIDAE, the leading aerospace and defense trade event in Latin America.  The event attracted business and government representatives of 50 countries and 500 exhibitors. The total attendance during the three day event was approximately 120,000 guests.  The event was possible thanks to the U.S. Commercial Service and the Small Business Administration's State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) Grant through the California STEP Grant Initiative. LARExC is an affiliate program of the L.A. Area Chamber. 
 
L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti to take part in this year's World Trade Week kickoff 
This week, the Chamber announced that L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti will attend and speak during the 92nd annual World Trade Week Kickoff Breakfast on Friday, May 4. The event, which kicks off Southern California's annual month-long celebration of world trade, brings more than 900 business and community leaders together with the international trade community. UNITE-LA partnering to make promises count
UNITE-LA, the Chamber's education & workforce development affiliate is partnering with WestEd and the Campaign for College Opportunity to support L.A. County College Promise programs through the "Promises That Count" initiative funded by the California Community Foundation.This week, the partners announced technical assistance and grant awards to seven local College Promise partnerships including Cerritos Complete at Cerritos College, First Year Promise at College of the Canyons, Promise Pathways at Long Beach City College, Los Angeles College Promise at the Los Angeles Community College District, Pathways Program at Pasadena City College, Rio Hondo Promise at Rio Hondo College, and the South Bay Promise at El Camino Community College District. The three-year initiative will work to support College Promise programs in improving student success.
 
 
Bixel Exchange Director judges CSUN Bull Ring Semi-Final
On Tuesday, Bixel Exchange Startup LAunch Director Kat Yalung was on hand to judge the semi-finals of the 3rd annual California State University, Northridge (CSUN) Bull Ring New Venture Competition. Hosted by CSUN's David Nazarian College of Business and Economics, the Bull Ring serves as a launch pad for innovative new ventures from CSUN students while providing access and exposure to mentors, coaching and potential investors. Twenty student teams presented their trade-show style displays as they pitched their new venture ideas for the opportunity to win a grand prize of $20,000 in the finals. 
 
L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline Director helping shape the workforce of the future
Lindsey Heisser, director, L.A. Tech Talent Pipeline, Bixel Exchange, traveled to the Bay Area on Thursday to speak at Stanford d.School's Shaping the Workforce of the Future event series. The panel, "Translating Market Demand for Skills into Programs and Curricula," focused on access and exposure for underrepresented youth pursuing tech employers, and was followed by a design-thinking workshop. She was joined by Dean Dan Schwartz, Stanford Graduate School of Education; Caz Pereira of Growth Sector; Carrie Varoquiers of Workday Foundation; Guy Halfteck of Knack; B.J. Schone of Atlassian; and Renee Frazwa of Edsurge.
