Nonprofits to Provide Targeted Support for City Homelessness Efforts

On October 29, the L.A. City Council passed a motion providing support to coordinate homeless efforts. Over the coming months, the California Community Foundation, The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, and Southern California Grantmakers, will provide targeted support to the City of Los Angeles' efforts, to help the city sustain and expedite strategies to address homelessness. As the city looks to advance a new strategic work plan for its Homelessness Strategy Committee, there is a need to develop a clear and cohesive roadmap of the city’s homelessness operations, across departments. This motion will aid in the process. The L.A. Area Chamber will monitor the motion and update our members.

 

Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass Announce Film and TV Tax Credit Expansion

Governor Newsom and Mayor Bass announced a proposal for a historic investment to expand California’s Film and Television Tax Credit Program, originally established during Mayor Bass's tenure as Speaker of the California State Assembly. In August 2024, Mayor Bass issued Executive Directive No. 8, reaffirming Los Angeles as the unrivaled epicenter of the global entertainment landscape and ensuring it remains a top choice for filmmakers. This directive establishes a Film and Television Task Force, comprising of film liaisons from relevant city departments and external industry stakeholders, to address production-related challenges and develop effective solutions. Mayor Bass Hosts Welcome Reception for New Consul General of Mexico

Chamber First Vice Chair George Pla, and President and CEO, Maria S. Salinas joined Mayor Karen Bass to welcome Ambassador Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, the new Consul General of Mexico in Los Angeles. Ambassador Gonzalez Gutierrez shared his vision for the relationship between Mexico and Los Angeles, expressing excitement about the collaborative opportunities stemming from their deep connection. Maria S. Salinas, spoke at the event and underscored the importance of U.S.-Mexico relations. Mexico is a leading trading partner of the United States, with bilateral trade totaling $263 billion in the first four months of 2023, which solidifies Mexico's position as the second-largest trading partner of the U.S.

Chamber Explores Tourism Minimum Wage and Convention Center Expansion

The L.A. Area Chamber's Travel, Tourism, and Sports Council convened to discuss recent local policies, including the Tourism Minimum Wage and the Los Angeles Convention Center Expansion Project. The Chamber will update members on local legislation and continue advocacy efforts in anticipation of the global events Los Angeles will host in the coming years.

Port of L.A. Awarded $412 Million to Reduce Emissions

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that seven California ports, including the Port of Los Angeles, will receive over $1 billion to transition to zero-emissions operations. The Port of Los Angeles will receive the largest grant of $412 million, which will be matched by $236 million from the port and its private sector partners, totaling $644 million. Port Executive Director Gene Seroka called it a “transformative investment” to help meet zero-emission goals and improve air quality. Nationwide, the EPA is allocating $3 billion for clean port investments, funding 55 projects to reduce pollution and combat climate change.

The Chamber's Global Initiatives Council welcomed Deputy Mayor of International Affairs in the Office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, Erin Bromaghim. In a fireside chat, Deputy Mayor Bromaghim shared her insights about how the City of L.A. will be affected by the upcoming major sporting events coming to the region and the business opportunities that may arise.
