L.A. BUSINESS THIS WEEK

November 8, 2024

L.A. County Voters Made Significant Decisions Election Night

Los Angeles County voters made impactful choices in the 2024 election. Measure G, aimed at expanding the Board of Supervisors to nine members and creating an elected county executive, holds a narrow lead. The Chamber’s L.A. Jobs PAC endorsed several candidates this election who were successful in winning their races, including District Attorney-elect Nathan Hochman and incoming L.A. City Councilperson Ysabel Jurado. The Chamber will host a post-election analysis session for our members on November 21. View full election results here.

Chamber Shares a Vision for the Region at Board Retreat

The Chamber's 2024 Board Retreat focused on preparing the region for major global events. The gathering convened business, civic, and community leaders to collaborate on key priorities impacting the business community. Highlights included insightful panel discussions with experts who shared information on infrastructure readiness, workforce development, and the impact global sporting events will have on regional growth. A fireside chat with Mayor Karen Bass, and a keynote with Pedro Pizarro, President & CEO of Edison International, who spoke about the role of sustainable energy and infrastructure in shaping Los Angeles' future, helped to the retreat as the Chamber looks to continue our momentum toward 2028 and beyond.

POLICY & ADVOCACY

Chamber Supports Motion to Enhance Olympic Collaboration Efforts

This week, the Chamber submitted written testimony to the L.A. County Board of Supervisors supporting the "Creating a Regional Approach for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games" motion. The motion seeks to enhance regional collaboration for the games by requiring, quarterly convenings about games-related planning with representatives from the county and county department leads. The Chamber believes this is a vital step for the county and region to effectively coordinate efforts to ensure safe, inclusive, and successful events. The games will provide significant economic benefits, and it’s essential that these opportunities are accessible to all, particularly small and minority-owned businesses.

Chamber Urges Oversight as Measure A Nears Passage

Los Angeles County Measure A, the "Homelessness Services and Affordable Housing Ordinance," is near passage with 55.74% of the vote in favor. The Chamber opposed Measure A, due to concerns about the lack of a sunset provision on the 1/2 cent tax increase and the absence of independent oversight, which are critical elements for accountability and effective governance. As the measure is poised to pass, the Chamber is actively engaging with the regional body overseeing the implementation of the measure to ensure effective metrics and accountability in its execution.
