LAUSD Releases 1-Year Strategy Report
Last week, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Carvalho released his Strategic Plan and Year One Report, which highlighted the district’s efforts to ensure students graduate ‘Ready for the World’. The report measured the district’s progress to prepare students for UC/CSU college admissions and highlighted new enrichment opportunities, improvements to outdoor learning spaces, and advancing technology infrastructure. The Chamber supports greater collaboration between industry and education. When the emerging workforce has the tools and resources needed to succeed, businesses benefit. Announcing Our 2024 Board Chair – Janet Lamkin
The L.A. Area Chamber will celebrate its 2024 Inaugural in two weeks, where we will highlight business leaders who have immensely impacted our community and the region. Join us as we welcome our incoming Board chair Janet Lamkin, Senior Vice President of Global Market and Community Innovation at United Airlines. In her role at United Airlines, Janet focuses on building customer loyalty in local markets and hubs, analyzing the competition in those markets, overseeing global sponsorships and leveraging partnerships to better serve United customers. We look forward to her Board leadership, and the exciting year ahead as Los Angeles ramps up preparations for the 2028 Olympics, World Cup and NFL Super Bowl.

Chamber Welcomes ‘Get in the Game’ Procurement Partners
This week the L.A. County Small Business Ecosystem Coalition and the Chamber launched the Get in the Game Initiative—a comprehensive regional program uniting small business stakeholders with leaders in infrastructure, transportation, and tourism industries. LA28, City of L.A., County of L.A., GoBiz CalOSBA, Amazon, SoCal Gas, Children’s Hospital, and Cedars Sinai, were among the key public and private partners who convened to exchange insights, setting the stage for sustained collaboration within the initiative. The initiative will help ensure inclusive participation in L.A.’s regional supplier economy, and encourage procurement opportunity in anticipation of upcoming regional marquee events and infrastructure projects. Edelman Trust Barometer Presented at Davos
Edelman released their 2024 Trust Barometer, which sheds light on a new paradox at the heart of society. While rapid innovation offers the promise of a new era of prosperity, it does so at the risk of exacerbating trust issues, leading to further societal instability and political polarization. To launch the research, Richard Edelman hosted an event in Davos, Switzerland, where he was joined by a group of global leaders for a discussion focused on the path forward for business and society. City Council Hears Ordinance on Local Business Bids
This week, the Los Angeles City Council heard a draft ordinance which, if passed, will provide additional bid and proposal preferences to businesses located in the City of Los Angeles. The Chamber testified at the City Council meeting to support this important effort to encourage local businesses as they compete for procurement opportunities.

Chamber Endorses Housing Supply and Affordability Act
Congresswoman Blunt Rochester, along with Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick and Joyce Beatty, and Senator Amy Klobuchar reintroduced the Housing Supply and Affordability Act this week. The Chamber endorsed the bipartisan, bicameral bill which would create a federal housing policy grant program that would provide funding for planning and policies which increase housing supply, affordability, and reduce the barriers to housing development. SCAQMD Hearing on Port Carbon Emissions
The Chamber was in attendance at the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) working group meeting on the Indirect Source Rule for Commercial Ports. During the meeting status updates were shared along with the approach to new technical discussions. The new timeline presented by SCAQMD outlines a release of preliminary draft rule language in the summer and a public hearing in the 4th quarter of 2024. The Chamber has advocated against the current proposed framework for the Port ISR given the potential detrimental impact to the regional economy by imposing caps on cargo at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and will continue our advocacy efforts on the ISR.

Disaster Assistance to Small Businesses Impacted by the I-10 Closure
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is offering low-interest federal disaster loans for working capital to small businesses economically impacted by the Interstate 10 fire and road closures which occurred on Nov. 11 - 19, 2023. Beginning Jan. 30, SBA customer service representatives are available at the Business Recovery Center to answer questions about the disaster loan program, explain the application process and help businesses complete their application. American Airlines Partners with West L.A. College for Aviation Career Program
Chamber member, American Airlines and West Los Angeles College have partnered to create a naviation maintenance technician program. Students now have direct access to the airline’s Los Angeles-based aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) and ongoing engagement opportunities, as well as guaranteed job interviews for top-performing students.
