Olympic Flag Arrives in Los Angeles

Following the successful Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Closing Ceremony was highlighted by a handoff of the Olympic flag to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, marking the end of the Paris Games. Mayor Bass, along with the Los Angeles delegation—including L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas, LA28 executives, and over 50 athletes—joined the official Delta Olympic Flag Flight, which arrived at LAX on Monday. Governor Gavin Newsom, First Partner Jennifer Newsom, and nearly 200 Delta guests welcomed the delegation back to Los Angeles. Read our statement here.

 

Delta Hosts Mayor Bass and Los Leaders at Team USA House

Los Angeles civic and business leaders convened at Team USA House for a celebratory luncheon hosted by Delta Air Lines, a founding partner of LA28. Delta Senior Vice President Peter Carter welcomed the delegation, while L.A. Mayor Karen Bass praised Paris Mayor Hidalgo for the successful Games and the valuable transition meetings. LA28 Board Chair Casey Wasserman expressed appreciation to the guests for their support. City of Los Angeles Ad Hoc Olympic Committee Chair Traci Park and L.A. County Board of Supervisors Chair Lindsey Horvath congratulated Paris for a successful Olympic Games. First Gentleman Doug Emhoff was also on hand to greet the delegation.

 

Chamber Visits Maison Deloitte for Olympic Innovation

L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas and First Vice Chair George Pla received an exclusive tour of Maison Deloitte in Paris from Terry Feit, Deloitte West Region Market Leader and Los Angeles Office Managing Partner. Deloitte, a Chamber Board member and Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner of the International Olympic Committee, shared insights and innovations designed to make a positive impact on the Olympics. Key topics discussed included sustainability, security, and community engagement.

 

Athletes Excited for LA28 Olympics

With over 50 athletes aboard the official Delta Air Lines Olympic Flag Flight, the flag arrived in Los Angeles on Monday to great fanfare. With nearly 300 guests on the flight, and 200 guests on the ground, athletes representing 17 different sports traveled to accompany Mayor Karen Bass and the Olympic Flag to L.A. On the tarmac, Artistic Swim Silver Medalists Kiana Hunter and Anita Alvarez and several other athletes expressed their excitement for 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

 

POLICY & ADVOCACY

Government & Fiscal Affairs Council Votes on Ballot Measures

On Tuesday, the Chamber's Government and Fiscal Affairs Policy Council (GFA) reviewed and voted on position recommendations for several propositions. The council made recommendations on whether to support or oppose Proposition 32, which concerns increasing the minimum wage, and Proposition 36, which aims to increase sentences for drug and theft-related crimes. Speakers from the California Chamber of Commerce, Swing Strategies, and the Vera Institute of Justice provided their insights. This meeting was the third in a series focused on statewide ballot measures. GFA’s recommendations will be presented to the Chamber Board in September for final consideration.

Chamber Discusses CHIP Program with City Planning Department

The Chamber, in conjunction with partners, met with the Los Angeles Department of City Planning to ensure the proposed Citywide Housing Incentive Program (CHIP) maximizes the potential for creating new housing in Los Angeles. The coalition discussed concerns about provisions that may hinder the financial feasibility of projects and ultimately limit the potential amount of new affordable and mixed-income housing it may yield.

Chamber Attends 12th Annual Global Supply Chain Excellence Summit

L.A. Area Chamber Board member and Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles, Gene Seroka, and Dr. Noel Hacegaba, Chief Operating Officer of the Port of Long Beach, delivered a comprehensive outlook on the ports at the 12th Annual Global Supply Chain Excellence Summit hosted by the USC Marshall Randall R. Kendrick Global Supply Chain Institute. They highlighted the crucial roles both ports play in ensuring the efficiency and resilience of the global supply chain, particularly amid ongoing challenges. Key topics included the impact of AI and technology on supply chain management, the increasing focus on sustainability and green supply chains, as well as the growing contributions and influence of women in the industry.

Small Business Council

Join us at the upcoming Small Business Council on August 21, with special guest Adriana Ring from Caltrans. This meeting will offer insights into support service programs tailored to help minority, disadvantaged, and women-owned businesses compete for procurement projects. Metro Connect: Small Business Certification Workshop

Metro’s Diversity and Economic Opportunity Department’s Certification Unit will host a workshop on the Small Business Enterprise (SBE) and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) programs. Attendees will learn about recent certification and contract compliance rule changes, gain insights into the federal DBE program and Metro’s SBE Program, including general eligibility requirements, the benefits of certification, and selecting the correct NAICS codes for their business. The workshop will also feature a B2G Online Application Overview, with Metro providing technical assistance for the DBE/SBE B2G Online Application. Learn more here.

Chamber, LAEDC, and L.A. Tourism & Convention Board Learn from Paris for LA28

L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas, LAEDC President & CEO Stephen Cheung, and Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board President & CEO Adam Burke joined Mayor Karen Bass at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony, where the Olympic Flag was passed to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. During their time in Paris, these leaders gained valuable insights into the impact of the Olympics on the city and its communities—learnings that will be crucial for preparations in the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Delta Official Air Line and Founding Partner of LA28

Delta Air Lines operated the official Olympic Flag Flight, bringing the Olympic flag back to Los Angeles. While in Paris, the Delta team hosted several events for Los Angeles guests. Senior Vice President Peter Carter was on hand to welcome guests. Delta, a member of the L.A. Area Chamber Board, is represented by executive Dana Debel.
