Prime Minister of Croatia Visits L.A. Area Chamber

The Chamber was pleased to host Prime Minister Andrej Plenković of the Republic of Croatia. During his visit, Prime Minister Plenković engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening partnerships between the Los Angeles business community and Croatia. Given San Pedro's significant Croatian immigrant population, this visit provided a valuable opportunity to enhance our existing relationship and explore collaborative initiatives which can benefit both regions. LADWP Secures $8M Grant for L.A. Energy Infrastructure

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) secured $8 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office, awarded through the Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity Incentive program. This investment will strengthen our city’s energy infrastructure, enhance our energy resilience, and ensure that Los Angeles continues to meet the needs of its businesses and residents as we transition toward a more sustainable future. Chamber Joins Bank of America Business Forum in the Inland Empire

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Inland Empire Economic Council and Bank of America hosted the Inland Empire Business Owner Forum, aimed at providing valuable resources to entrepreneurs. L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas was a featured speaker, sharing insights on the impact of Latinos on business growth and how small businesses can position themselves for success, particularly with upcoming global sporting events in the L.A. region. L.A. City Council President Harris-Dawson Proposes New Committee

As one of his first actions, L.A. City Council President Harris-Dawson introduced a motion to transfer jurisdiction over wage-related matters from the Tourism Committee to the newly proposed Economic, Community Development, and Jobs Committee. Details on potential committee assignments related to this change are yet to be released. The Chamber will continue to engage with stakeholders and provide updates.

Chamber Testifies on Citywide Housing Incentive Programs

The Chamber testified on the draft Citywide Housing Incentive Program (CHIP) Ordinance during the City Planning Commission meeting this week. The CHIP is part of the Housing Element Rezoning Program, designed to address the city's housing crisis and fulfill housing obligations under state law. In coalition with partners, the City Planning Commission incorporated Chamber recommendations into the existing draft and offered additional suggestions to the Planning Commission to ensure the CHIP optimizes the potential for creating new housing in L.A. at all income levels.

Mexican Consulate Hosts Chamber to Discuss Cross-Border Trade

The Chamber attended an exclusive luncheon at the Official Residence of Mexico in Los Angeles, hosted by Consul General Ambassador Carlos González Gutiérrez and sponsored by Monex. This event highlighted the deep-rooted ties between Los Angeles and Mexico, a vital trading partner with over $94.8 billion in bilateral trade, while providing an economic and political outlook on Mexico. Juan Pérez, a Bloomberg top-ranked G-10 currency forecaster, offered valuable insights into the 2024 fluctuations of the Mexican Peso, equipping business leaders with strategies for navigating cross-border business opportunities.

Remembering Dr. Maureen Kindel: A Trailblazer in Public Service and Education

The L.A. Area Chamber is heart-broken at the passing of former Board member Dr. Maureen Kindel, a trailblazer in public service and education. She served on the Chamber’s Board for over 20 years. She was the first female President of the Los Angeles City Board of Public Works. Dr. Kindel was a founding director of the Los Angeles Business Federation and the Pacific Council on Foreign Relations, and she contributed to democracy in 26 countries through the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES). As Chair of the L.A. Area Chamber Education Committee, she led major Education Summits. She served as a Regent Emeritus at Loyola Marymount University, where she earned her Doctorate in Education. Her legacy will continue to inspire future generations. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable life and work.
