Courts Uphold Prop. 22
A California appeals court ruled Monday that drivers for Uber, Lyft, DoorDash, and other platforms can be classified as independent contractors and not employees. The court's decision upheld the Prop. 22 initiative, which exempted rideshare companies from a state law to classify an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 Californians who provide rides or deliveries as employees. Despite this development, the Service Employees International Union said it would "consider all options," including seeking a review from the state Supreme Court. The court's decision is considered a victory for Uber and Lyft and validates private companies' efforts to leverage the ballot box to oppose state laws. |
