Voters to Weigh in on 10 Ballot Initiatives
In November, voters will decide on 10 important propositions on the ballot, including borrowing $20 billion for climate programs and school construction, approving three state constitutional amendments, and efforts to address complex issues like crime, healthcare, and taxes. Over the next several months, the Chamber will review these statewide ballot measures and several local initiatives, including governance proposals from the City of L.A. and L.A. County.

Get In The Game Featured at Latino Chamber Expo
The Los Angeles Latino Chamber of Commerce (LALCC), who facilitates economic structures and policy initiatives to empower Latino business development, welcomed nearly 1,000 guests to its 2024 Business Expo. The event convened experts from the public and private sectors. L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas joined LALCC Chairman Darrell Sauceda for a fireside chat to discuss the Get In The Game Initiative, highlighting the nearly $150 billion in procurement opportunities for businesses as Los Angeles prepares to host major global sporting events.

LAUSD Superintendent Highlights Progress in Annual Address
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho delivered his annual address before the start of the new school year. He highlighted a rise in English Language and Math test scores for the 2023-24 academic year, signaling a recovery from the COVID-19 learning gaps. The new school year, starting on August 12, will introduce several initiatives: a mentorship program for male students of color, a partnership with USC to enhance digital literacy and new workforce education programs for adults. Carvalho also shared information about the new Principal's Academy and the launch a training program to help adults learn new and emerging technologies at the Port of Los Angeles.

Chamber Reacts to Crime Stats, Prioritizes Business Safety Measures
A recent statewide crime statistics report by the California Department of Justice found that reported violent crimes rose slightly by 3.5%, while reported property crimes slightly declined by 1.6%. The Chamber will continue to monitor and engage in efforts to address public safety, particularly issues impacting businesses, such as retail theft and organized retail crime.

Chamber Joins Port of Long Beach's ZEERO Roundtable
The Chamber joined the Port of Long Beach’s ZEERO Roundtable & Collaborative meeting on July 23. Under its Zero Emissions, Energy Resilient Operations Program, known as ZEERO, the Port of Long Beach presented its Pier Wind project, which will allow for the assembly of the world’s largest floating offshore wind turbines standing as tall as the Eiffel Tower. Members of the community were invited to provide feedback and comments.
