Gov. Gavin Newsom released a revised budget to his original $203.3 billion budget for fiscal 2020 – 2021. The “May Revise” attempts to close a $54 billion deficit over a period of three years. The governor highlights his priorities as protecting public health, public safety, public education and aiding small business. He proposes a budget that attempts to provide support to Californians while trying to rebuild the economy.

The Los Angeles County Roadmap to Recovery
|
|
Is your business prepared for reopening? The Los Angeles County Health Department's website shared its " Roadmap to Recovery: A Phased Approach to Reopening Safely ." As we enter phase two of the recovery, businesses such as florists, some retailers, car dealerships, golf courses, trails, libraries, museums and other low-risk businesses will re-open with modifications. COVID-19 and Workers Comp -
What you need to know
Gov. Gavin Newsom enacted changes to California workers' compensation standards. The executive order states that if any "covered worker" who reported to work outside the home at the direction of their employer contracts COVID-19, it would automatically be presumed to be work-related injury. Executive Order Grants Business Owners an Extension on Filing Business Personal Property Statements
Businesses now have until May 31 to file for the Business Property Statement, thanks to an executive order signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom. California business property taxpayers are required to report their taxable business personal property, including business equipment, supplies and tangible assets. Assessors do not have the authority to waive penalties for those who missed the May 7 deadline but they are working with state leaders to provide relief. Read the full press release.

What Does a Small Business Have to Do to Survive?
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce released a Small Business Coronavirus Impact Poll revealing national sentiment of small businesses. The poll results mirrored results of our own members -- Businesses are finding unique ways to transform their operations while adhering to social distancing requirements and Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans are critical for larger small businesses.

L.A. Area Chamber Participating in New LAPD Initiative
The L.A. Area Chamber of Commerce was invited to participate in a new Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initiative. In 2019, the LAPD celebrated its 150th anniversary. While it is a milestone worth celebrating it is also a great time for reflection. The LAPD will be taking time to evaluate the academy's Basic Recruit Training Course. To ensure new officers truly understand the history of where they interact and work, who they are protecting and serving, and the decades that precede their "swearing in," key community stakeholders have been invited to a discussion to help shape police curriculum.

500,000 protective disposable face masks were donated to member companies for their safe and healthy return to the workplace.
