Chamber voices support of the Port of Long Beach Port Truck Plan
The Chamber testified in support of the Port of Long Beach Port Truck Plan on Tuesday, which did not include the employee mandate. The Port of Long Beach has moved ahead of its partner, the Port of Los Angeles, to approve a business friendly approach to provide for clean diesel trucks. The Long Beach plan features a lease-to-own model that allows the port to maintain its small business population and meet its clean air deadlines. The Port will begin banning older diesel trucks on Oct. 1, 2008 and collect a cargo fee of $35 per TEU to pay for retrofits and upgrades. Chamber-supported green building law approved by city committees

A joint session of the L.A. City Council Planning & Land Use Management and Energy & Environment committees approved a proposed ordinance establishing a Green Building Program last Friday. The ordinance outlines a permit process for projects at or above 50,000 square feet or 50 units to meet the obligations of the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) compliance at a certified level. L.A. City Council must approve the program before it is adopted. Contact Public Policy Manager Vanessa Rodriguez, 213.580.7531 or [email protected].

Chamber receives update on state's international trade study
The state will leverage and focus existing international trade resources without duplicating current efforts at the federal or local level, said Garrett Ashley, California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency Undersecretary for International Trade, at the Chamber's International Trade & Investment Committee meeting Wednesday. The International Trade & Investment study recommends utilizing standing organizations as advisory boards and establishing an intra-governmental coordinating body. The state will hold off on opening overseas trade offices until the strategies are successfully implemented locally.
