THE AMERICAS BUSINESS FORUM. More than 200 business leaders seeking to expand their trade opportunities attended the Second Annual The Americas Business Forum at UCLA Wednesday. "When more people want to purchase U.S. products, it leads to key growth in the American economy," said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Dennis Hightower, above. The forum, which supports President Barack Obama's National Export Initiative, featured country briefings and best practices workshops. Today, attendees had one-on-one meetings about business and export opportunities with U.S. Commercial Officers stationed in 14 countries. Chamber supports Internet-based businesses at L.A. City Hall
The L.A. City Council's Budget & Finance Committee recommended Monday that the full Council adopt the creation of a new Internet business tax category. Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben testified in support of the tax category. There are a number of internet-based companies that are looking to relocate outside of Los Angeles due to the City's decision to reclassify their businesses into a higher tax bracket. The new category would be established at the lowest rate available to city businesses and is considered a key step to attracting and retaining well-paying jobs in Los Angeles. The Council will vote on the decision Friday. Contact Beverly Kenworthy, 213.580.7531 or [email protected].
California's Race to the Top not over yet
Despite todays announcement that California is not among the 16 finalists for phase one of the Race to the Top funding, the Chamber will continue to work with legislators, educators, parents and community members to ensure that the State qualifies for the second phase of funding. "We are extremely disappointed to learn that California has not advanced as a finalist," said Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben. "With applications for phase two due in just a few months, we need to stay focused to learn where our application fell short and then continue our collaborative efforts to ensure we're not left off again." Applications for phase two are due June 1, with finalists announced in August and winners in September. View more information about the Race to the Top competition. SCLN visits Inland Empire; explores Southern California-Mexico connection
The Leadership Southern California Class of 2010 traveled to the Inland Empire last Friday to gain a better understanding of the people, places and trends currently shaping the inland region of Southern California. The Fellows received a foundation of knowledge about the region's housing crisis and potential for huge growth by 2012-2013 from Brad Kemp, Beacon Economics. At an event last week, Southern California Leadership Network (SCLN) alumni met with leaders of the Mexican-American community in Hollywood. Panelists stressed the importance of integrating Latino immigrants into society. The discussion was moderated by Chamber Board Member and Leadership L.A. alumna Maria Contreras-Sweet, PROMERICA Bank, and panelists included: Mexican Consul General Juan Marcos Gutierrez; La Opinión CEO Monica Lozano; and California Community Foundation President Antonia Hernandez. Term limits reform
The Chamber's effort to qualify a term limits reform initiative for the November 2010 ballot is on its way to 500,000 signatures. This is a joint effort between the Chamber and L.A. County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. The initiative would reduce the total number of years a state lawmaker could serve from 14 to 12, but allow them to serve the entire time in one house if reelected by voters. This improvement would reduce lawmaker turnover, increase institutional knowledge, incentivize long-term policymaking and encourage greater bipartisan compromise.

HR Tip of the Month
If an employee requests a copy of their personnel records, does the company have to comply with this request?
Employees in California have a right only to copies of documents they have signed. The employer can permit copies of other documents. One exception: employees are entitled to copies of payroll records whether signed or not.
