Thinking globally, acting locally in the fight against terrorism

The Chamber's Southern California Leadership Network (SCLN) held a special briefing that addressed how prepared the L.A. region is for potential terrorist attacks. The conversation was led by homeland security and local law enforcement experts who discussed the patterns of global terrorism. The critical area for attacks remains "homegrown terror," and the experts demonstrated how well the various agencies work together in combatting these dangers. Thank you to City National Bank and the Hetty Group for sponsoring and hosting this important conversation.
BOTTOM LINE: SCLN brings leaders together to expand the conversation around protecting our communities and aiding counterterrorism efforts.

Metro and CARB provide transportation program updates

On Tuesday, the Transportation & Goods Movement Council met with Pauletta Tonilas, Metro's chief communications officer, to learn about the June updates to the sales tax measure that will be on the November ballot to fund transportation infrastructure. Tonilas reviewed the changes made based on extensive public outreach and next steps in the public education campaign. The Council was also joined by the Chief of the California Air Resource Board's Air Quality Planning Branch, who discussed the provisions in the State Implementation Plan to meet mobile source emission reduction requirements over the next 15 years.
BOTTOM LINE: The Chamber is at the forefront of the region's vital transportation plans.
County goes with marijuana tax to fund homeless services

On Tuesday, L.A. County's Board of Supervisors weighed November ballot proposals to fund homelessness programs. Funds raised from the proposals would service programs identified in the County's comprehensive Homeless Initiative finalized in February. Chamber President & CEO Gary Toebben offered comments at the Supervisor's meeting in support of a general sales tax rather than a parcel or marijuana tax. Ultimately, the Supervisors voted 3-2 to place a 10 percent marijuana sales tax on the ballot. The tax would raise $13-130 million annually, depending on whether recreational marijuana is legalized statewide in November.

BOTTOM LINEThe Chamber continues to play an active role in working with the County to address L.A.'s homeless population.
