The Power to Vote - Register Today

Today is the first ever National Voter Registration Day. Today we celebrate the power that fuels our democracy and has built a history of prosperity that even now, despite our recent struggles, makes us the envy of the world. Simply put, we have the power to vote. A right still denied so many in the world, a power that others are fighting and dying for around the world.

So it is with solemn dedication that we honor this day and its meaning and throw off the mask of laziness and ingratitude. Many of us take the right to vote for granted. We treat it as a chore and ascribe to it the excuses "my vote doesn't count anyway" or "my vote doesn’t change a thing." Such statements become a self fulfilling prophecy, for the only way to ensure your vote won’t matter is to never exercise it.

Today a network of more than 1,000 organizations is raising awareness to make sure no one misses out on voting because they did not know when or how to register. Social media techniques and good old fashioned shoe leather will educate and register tens of thousands of voters across the country.

The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce lends its voice to this effort, and asks all those who get this communication to share it with their employees and professional networks. Californians can register to vote online.

Creating a better nation, state and community begins with this simple step. Registering to vote and then voting. It only takes a few minutes, and you will be the beneficiary.

And that's The Business Perspective.
