Root, Root, Root for the Dodgers

Root, Root, Root for the Dodgers

It doesn’t get any better than last night’s 3-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.  The temperature at game time was 79 degrees and the sky was Dodger blue.  The historic stadium was filled with more than 53,000 loyal fans who knew they had a crucial role to play in energizing a team that was down 0-2 in the series.

True to the multi-cultural diversity of Los Angeles, a rookie starting pitcher from South Korea who speaks limited English was on the mound for seven innings and outdueled the feared veteran Cardinal ace.  Another rookie from Cuba with limited English also let his athletic ability speak for itself when he broke out of a 0-11 batting slump and showed the skills and enthusiasm that energized the Dodgers during their record-setting run of victories in July and August.

As a boy I grew up throwing a rubber ball against a barn to practice fielding ground balls and catching fly balls because my closest neighbor was a mile away.  I lived to play baseball during recess at school and during the summer in the nearest town of 950 people.  Boys and girls from throughout the United States and the world who speak many different languages were inspired by what they saw last night, and what is possible in America.  I was inspired too.

There are many important conversations taking place in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. that I could have commented on today, but reflecting on this great Dodger victory is more fun and inspiring. Thank you Dodgers for the energy, pride and confidence you brought to Los Angeles and to young people everywhere last night.

And that's The Business Perspective.

Gary,
Thanks for your topic this week. As a Chamber Member and a young woman in her 40s who has been going to Dodger games since I was a child, this was a wonderful victory and allowed everyone for one day to just have fun and not think about all the pressing problems here in Los Angeles and Washington, DC. I too, was one of the 53,000 screaming fans at the game lastt night and so proud of the team. Can't wait for the World Series to arrive in Los Angeles. Cheers to Magic Johnson for helping to inspire the team and showing them that winning is possible if you just believe. Until next time......

Gary, I loved your choice of a weekly topic. I did the same thing, throwing a ball against the wall for hours as a child right here in Los Angeles. You did a great job of pointing out the similarities and the shared dreams of people in Los Angeles and around the world. If only the world's national leaders focused on everyone' s similarities rather than differences we could find the possibility of world peace instead of constant conflict and fear. Thank you for sharing in your honest down to Earth way.

Thank you Mr. Toebben for a well description of last night's game. I was one of the 53,000 cheering for our favorite men in blue. The night was spectacular and the momentum was at its highest. Although the parking was a situation of attention, but after the great win, everyone was respectful and patient - a true Angelino and Dodger fan attitude! :)
