From the entrepreneur tinkering in his or her garage to the mighty aerospace industry, making things has always been part of the DNA of Southern California. According to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation, there are more than 365,000 people employed by the manufacturing industry in L.A. County, the most for any county in America. Led by aerospace and fashion, manufacturing accounts for almost 10 percent of all jobs in L.A. County.
But manufacturing, like all other industries, is changing and the utilization of advanced technology is essential to competitiveness. From startups to established enterprises, businesses have no choice but to evolve and innovate if they are to thrive and grow. We, as a community, must encourage that innovation and create an environment that nourishes innovative manufacturing companies in our city and county.
That’s why L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti has partnered with the L.A. Area Chamber and Dun & Bradstreet to launch a “Make It in LA” survey. Last week, the survey was sent to more than 130,000 businesses from Dun & Bradstreet’s comprehensive commercial database. The survey is targeted at businesses that support the design, manufacturing and retail sale of physical goods produced in the L.A. area.
The survey includes questions about growth projections, capacity for contract manufacturing and partnerships between established enterprises and start-ups. All L.A. area businesses, big or small, are invited to participate, wherever you are and whether or not you self-identify as a manufacturing firm. The Chamber will work with Mayor Garcetti and Dun & Bradstreet to assess the information gathered and develop strategies to support the manufacturing ecosystem in L.A.
You can link to the "Make It in LA" survey directly at http://www.makeitinla.org/survey. It takes approximately 15 minutes and we are asking businesses to complete the survey by close of business on Friday, June 26.
Encouraging manufacturing is essential to the continued growth of the L.A. economy. You can help grow manufacturing jobs by filling out this survey today. Thank you in advance for your participation.
And that's The Business Perspective.
