Yesterday, the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges (CCC) announced the appointment of Eloy Ortiz Oakley as the next Chancellor of the 113-college system.
The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce applauds the California Community College Board of Governors for appointing Chancellor Ortiz - an experienced higher education leader - and the first Latino to lead the largest community college system in the nation.
Oakley brings extensive community college leadership experience to the position, including his most recent service as Superintendent, President of Long Beach City College District. The Chamber has long hailed Oakley's pivotal role in the formation of the Long Beach College Promise, a nationally recognized partnership between Long Beach City College, Long Beach Unified School District and California State University Long Beach. The Long Beach College Promise provides streamlined pathways and structured supports to help all Long Beach students prepare for, enroll in, and succeed in college.
We have been fortunate to work closely with Oakley during his service on the Chamber's Board of Directors and we have been privileged to observe his leadership at both the local and state level on behalf of California students.
Oakley takes the helm of a system that is experiencing tremendous transformation. All colleges in the system have enhanced their commitment to improving completion outcomes through the development of a Student Success initiative. CCC is also poised to implement more and better partnerships with business that will provide employers with better access to a more qualified workforce for high-value jobs.
We are confident that Chancellor-elect Oakley, a vocal and passionate leader, will continue to advance reforms across the system - reforms that will facilitate student success and provide California employers with the talented workforce they need. We look forward to partnering with Chancellor-elect Oakley on this essential and highly critical state-wide mission.
And that's The Business Perspective.
