Saying Goodbye to a Los Angeles Legend

This morning, Los Angeles said goodbye to civil rights leader John W. Mack. A giant among men, whose sweeping impact will never be forgotten.

As head of the Los Angeles Urban League for three and half decades, John was a powerful, leading voice through some of our City’s most challenging times. From 1969 to 2005, he built the organization into one of the country's most successful non-profits, a mega force for hope and success for thousands of Angelenos, especially African-American youth.

John was asked by many elected officials to serve because he was a leader they knew was universally respected and willing to dedicate his time, energy and considerable talents to the people of Los Angeles. When Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa appointed him to the role of president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, John was able to take the years of trust and influence he built up to institute profound reforms to bridge the gap between the LAPD and the communities it serves. He continued that community commitment as a member of Los Angeles Planning Commission under Mayor Eric Garcetti, championing the importance of affordable housing.

Then there is all that you won't find on his distinguished resume. What many of us will remember most about John is that rare combination of intelligence, wisdom, compassion and humility he possessed. He made you feel special and respected in his presence.

The Chamber was proud to award John with the Civic Medal of Honor upon his retirement from the Urban League in 2005, our highest honor recognizing extraordinary non-elective civic and community service in the region. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us for all these years. Los Angeles is a better place today because of John W. Mack.

And that's the Business Perspective.
