The Assembly Blue Ribbon Commission on Early Childhood Education released its draft report last week and held its final hearing on Monday. In 2016, Speaker Anthony Rendon established the commission made up of six legislators and nine community appointments, including the Chamber's Senior Director of Education Policy, Sonia Campos-Rivera. The Commission’s report includes recommendations for expanding access to early education, including training and better compensating the child care workforce, improving the quality of care, retrofitting more preschool and child care classrooms and transforming early childhood finance strategies. The business community is directly impacted by this issue especially as we continue to see child care costs crippling working parents. According to the CA Budget and Policy Center, a single mother in 2017 and 2018 with an annual income of $52,076 and no access to subsidized care would pay nearly half of her income for an infant or preschool-age child’s care. The Commission will be taking feedback on the recommendations until March 20.
