Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas visited East Los Angeles College (ELAC) to discuss how the college is working to prepare students for careers in entrepreneurship, and what the college is doing to create good-paying jobs and careers through education, entrepreneurship and innovation to address students' basic needs. The conversation was joined by Paul De La Cerda, the college's dean of resource, economic development and innovation, and emcee Brandon Shamim, chair of the Chamber's Small Business Council.
ELAC Foundation and OmniWorks Economic Development, two nonprofit organizations that support women and minorities in underserved areas of Los Angeles, partnered and launched ESTEC LA Incubator, which is hosted at ELAC's Corporate Center. ELAC's Transforming Lives Campaign (TLC) is raising awareness of the significant challenges students are facing and is supporting SB 291, a bill to cover the true cost of attendance for a community college student and eliminate a longstanding disparity in the financial aid community college students receive.
Salinas shared the Chamber's advocacy work opening career pathways for underrepresented groups, including women, minorities and justice-involved youth, and how organizations and schools like ELAC can better partner with L.A.'s business community.
