Tuesday, June 5 is election day and here are the recommendations from our staff and Board of Directors, as well as endorsements from our L.A. Jobs PAC.
The Chamber's L.A. Jobs PAC is endorsing the re-election of Sheriff Jim McDonnell and L.A. County Assessor Jeffrey Prang. McDonnell was originally elected at a challenging time and worked hard to reform the Department and implement programs to restore public faith in the Sheriff's office. Prang has taken an office that often flies under the radar and made it his mission to increase public accessibility and outreach. Both have done an excellent job during the last four years.

To care for people with complex needs, it is critical to coordinate and integrate the full spectrum of care—medical, behavioral, socioeconomic and beyond. For the sickest and most vulnerable Medi-Cal patients, California’s Whole Person Care (WPC) pilot will do just that. It will do it by increasing links and services outside of the traditional health system into the larger community.

Los Angeles, as the second largest city in the USA, should be able to compete for most major domestic and international conventions, but we cannot. Our convention center is not large enough, not technologically advanced enough, and equally as important, we do not have a sufficient supply of hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center.

It is very unusual for the Chamber to support five out of five ballot propositions on a statewide election. That is the recommendation from our staff and Board of Directors for the June election.

In his January budget, Gov. Brown proposed a new funding formula for California's Community Colleges. The proposed "Student-Focused Funding Formula" would change the way community colleges are funded, from an enrollment-driven funding model, to one that takes into account the success of students in completing their educational goals. This outcomes-based formula reflects a long-standing Chamber priority to utilize funding incentives to improve student retention and the completion of degrees, credentials and transfer requirements.

Half a million direct jobs. Nearly 600 million tons of freight annually valued at $1.7 trillion. A 55 percent increase in warehouse jobs in the last decade. These numbers from a 2017 LAEDC report are a snapshot into the importance of the goods movement industry in Southern California. From the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, through the heart of L.A. and Orange counties, and deep into the Inland Empire, the jobs associated with international trade and e-commerce sustain more than one-half million families in our region. And the number is growing.
