LOS ANGELES AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RESPONDS TO U.S. SUPREME COURT RULING THAT REJECTS BID TO END DACA PROGRAM

LOS ANGELES, CA - (June 18, 2020) The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce applauds the historic United States Supreme Court ruling blocking the Trump administration’s attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Today, more than 700,000 lives have reassurance as the Supreme Court voted 5-4 in favor of DACA. This program, which began in 2012, ensures relief of deportation and provides undocumented immigrant students the right to legally work. More than 90 percent of DACA recipients are employed, in school, or serving in the U.S. military and 1 in 10 jobs in the U.S. are generated from immigrant-owned businesses.

“The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce stands with DACA recipients and we celebrate the Supreme Court’s ruling. Ending DACA would have been tragic. The program protections ensure they have access to higher education and an opportunity to work and participate in this country’s economy,” said L.A. Area Chamber President & CEO Maria S. Salinas.

“DACA recipients grew up in the United States, attended school here, started careers and have raised their own families here. All over this nation, 1.5 million individuals live with a DACA recipient. They are entrepreneurs, business owners, students, contributors to our economy and vital members of our community,” said Salinas.

While this ruling is a solid win, we also acknowledge there is still more work to do. Congress needs to address comprehensive immigration reform that creates a clear path to citizenship for undocumented youth, and we will continue to lend our voice for these solutions.
