2021 World Trade Week Chair

Mark Thorpe

CEO

Ontario International Airport

Since my first moment to participate in the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce’s World Trade Week, 17 years ago, I have been enriched by the unique opportunities the event provides for personal education, the exchange of ideas, professional networking, and the development of promising business relationships.  I have lived and worked in different parts of the U.S., I do not know of a similar event which matches Los Angeles World Trade Week Southern California’s impact. It provides a platform for the growth and progress of international trade, but also in the professional growth of all who participate.

When I gladly accepted the invitation to be Vice Chair of the World Trade Week 2019, I had no idea, as did all of you, that 2020 would bring such unprecedented challenges to the world’s public health systems, economies, and communities on a global scale.

As the world and our region continues to struggle to respond and recover from the pandemic and its impacts, I have found the task of chairing this year’s World Trade Week to be as daunting as anything I’ve faced during my professional career.  I am honored and humbled to be entrusted with such a responsibility, and I believe during times like these the potential impact of World Trade Week is greater in magnitude than the challenge at hand.

The value of World Trade Week to our region’s international trade community is highlighted by the theme our committee adopted for our 2021 events: “Global Trade – The Road to Economic Recovery.”  Global trade is an indispensable pillar of our region’s economy, during the pandemic, it proved to be an important lifeline that kept the world economy afloat when businesses were closed, workers stayed at home, and in-person contact came to a standstill.  And, just as global trade has continued to support our global economy in crisis, it will be one of the most important drivers of economic recovery in the year to come, and for years into the future.

I hope you will join me in celebrating World Trade Week 2021 as an opportunity to re-emphasize the importance of international trade but also to highlight its unique power to move our businesses, communities, region, nation and the world, toward economic recovery.

Thank you to our past WTW chairs for their commitment, dedication and support:
